Overview Inspired by the modern, bold, and stepped characteristics of the art deco movement - the art deco bike ring is an ideal addition to the Eglinton Way BIA. The design leverages pattern repetition, rounded and sharp details and distribution of open versus slotted sections to demonstrate the way in which distinctive characteristics of the art deco movement may be applied to a highly functional and elegant solution for the growing cyclist community in Toronto. Alongside novel developments such as the LRT and neighbouring condominiums - the art deco sun bike ring embodies the strength, resilience, and ever-adapting characteristics of our great city.

Installation This design will be core drilled into the sidewalk - maintaining a 2” clearance from the ground as well as a minimum of 6” of the support post inserted into the concrete. Cutouts in the support post aid in securing the bike ring into the ground by allowing the concrete filling to disperse.

Fabrication The entire design utilizes laser cut Corten steel which is highly durable, economical, and low-maintenance. Recessed 1/4” sections in the main posts create depth and added shadows to highlight the aesthetic and a section at the center of the ‘touch bar’ provides an opportunity for engraving.

Advantage The Art Deco Sun Bike Ring provides a number of advantages for the cycling community and public at large: Rounded posts provide support for parcels and helmets to be hung; multiple locking points and varying section cut-outs accommodate bikes of different styles and sizes; large semicircular cut-out provided for pedals; horizontal ‘touch’ bar assists in detection for the visually impaired; provides durability and safety; elegant and sculptural-esque design makes it an appealing addition to city streets.
